How should you begin your day in Košice? You should certainly treat yourself to a lovely breakfast in a cool place. Cafés and restaurants have become a dominant feature of Košice’s city centre during the past few years. You can find a variety of cuisines – anything from Mexican to Ukrainian, and of course, Slovak. Which places should you visit? Explore the city through its food hotspots with us in this article:
1. Dobré Bistro
When in town, make sure to enjoy your first meal of the day on Garbiarska Street in Dobré Bistro which is located in a very pleasant neighbourhood near the city centre. The interior of the bistro is not large but it’s designed with taste, combining brick with turquoise details. From their breakfast menu, you should try Eggs Benedict on spelt sandwich bread with dried ham, baby spinach and hollandaise sauce. Although the bistro is slightly more on the expensive side, the atmosphere, service and the great coffee all make up for it.
2. Raňajkáreň Rozprávka
Our selection would hardly be complete without a place that has ‘breakfast’ in the name. “Fairy-Tale Breakfast” is located right in the historical city centre, on Hrnčiarska Street which once was the Crafts Lane. The street is home to a herbalist, potter, silversmith and a carpenter, as well as several coffee shops and restaurants. Raňajkáreň Rozprávka is one of them. The interior is mostly wooden and very cosy. Try out their warm tortillas with spinach, cheddar and sun-dried tomatoes for a very decent price.
3. GESTO Cafe & Brunch
GESTO cafe & brunch is the only place on our list which is not located directly in the city centre. You will find it on the square Námestie L. Novomeského. The interior of Gesto is full of light and very well thought out. The breakfast menu contains two plates for a fair price; one with eggs, bacon and sausages and the other one with toasts, butter, jam and vegetables. Drinks come with the menu – you can pick from hot cocoa, coffee and so on. Don’t miss out on their pancakes with maple syrup and fruit.
4. San Domenico
San Domenico is a small coffee shop located right next to the oldest church in Košice on the historical square Dominikánske námestie. From spring to autumn, it is surrounded by a busy market place which adds to its unique atmosphere. Order a sweet breakfast bagel with organic butter and homemade jam or banana bread and homemade Nutella. This typical Jewish pastry from Poland is well-known in New York but it’s not so easy to find it in Košice, so you’ll surely appreciate this café’s menu.
5. Pogo urban caffe
Pogo urban caffe is conveniently situated directly on Hlavná Street in front of the St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral. Its spacious interior has been designed with great precision and emphasis on maintaining the urban character of the place. Bicycles hung on the walls only add to this. Try one of the popular Pogo spreads – we recommend the sheep cheese one. Otherwise, an omelette with cherry tomatoes, cheese and mushrooms will satisfy your hunger too. The food and the morning atmosphere at Pogo are worth experiencing.
